Jamila’s Legacy: Breaking Mental Health Stigma for 10 Years

For the past ten years, Jamila’s Legacy has been quietly but powerfully changing lives across Leicester and beyond. This grassroots charity embodies the belief that when compassion meets action, remarkable change is possible.

Mental health remains one of society’s most misunderstood challenges. Despite one in four adults in the UK experiencing mental health difficulties each year—and one in five young people affected between the ages of 8 and 25—discussions around mental health continue to be taboo in many communities.

Cultural stigma, fear of judgement, and a lack of understanding often prevent people from seeking the help they urgently need. It is organisations like Jamila’s Legacy that are not only valuable but essential in tackling these barriers.

Led by Rehana Sidat and a team of dedicated volunteers, Jamila’s Legacy has spent a decade breaking down stereotypes and creating safe spaces where conversations about mental health can take place openly and with dignity. Their work is entirely powered by volunteers—ordinary people giving their time, energy, and hearts to support those in crisis.

“Jamila was a vibrant young woman whose life was tragically cut short due to systemic failures in mental health support,” said Rehana Sidat. “Her legacy drives our crucial work to break down stigma, foster understanding, and ensure no one has to face their struggles alone in the shadows of their community.”

The charity’s community-led initiatives address cultural nuances and offer early intervention where it is needed most, bridging gaps left by larger services. In doing so, they provide vital support to vulnerable individuals who might otherwise be left without help.

However, as a non-profit organisation, Jamila’s Legacy relies entirely on donations and goodwill to continue its life-changing work. While their impact has grown steadily over the past decade, so too has the demand for their services.

Mental health inequalities persist, and access to support remains unequal. Yet, through compassion, collaboration, and commitment, change is possible.

Leicester Times is proud to highlight the important work of Jamila’s Legacy in raising mental health awareness and supporting the community. They have shown what can be achieved when a community comes together—and now they need our help to continue their vital mission.

Please consider supporting Jamila’s Legacy, because everyone deserves access to mental health support, and no one should suffer in silence.
