Leicester recently witnessed a spectacular celebration of Vaisakhi, bringing together hundreds of people from diverse backgrounds to honour the Sikh festival. The event, which spanned multiple locations, offered a unique blend of cultural, religious, and entrepreneurial showcases, creating an atmosphere of unity, learning, and joy.
The iconic John Lewis store at Highcross Leicester became a focal point of the celebrations, offering a platform for new entrepreneurs to showcase their talents and products. From jewellery and clothing to accessories, the store transformed into a vibrant marketplace, supporting small businesses while celebrating the spirit of Vaisakhi.

In addition to entrepreneurship, John Lewis highlighted the cultural and religious significance of Vaisakhi through interactive activities. One of the standout features was a 3D art exhibit that educated visitors about Vaisakhi and its importance in Sikhism. The event also included a live painting session by local Sikh artist Jagjit Kaur, who beautifully depicted the Golden Temple, a sacred site in Sikhism. Visitors were captivated by her artistry, which brought a spiritual and cultural essence to the celebration.
Bob Gill, a representative of the John Lewis branch, expressed his enthusiasm for the event. “John Lewis is very proud to celebrate Vaisakhi with our Leicester community. We have worked very closely with our local community and charities, including Guru Nanak Aid and MLSS, to bring this wonderful celebration to our store. It’s been an honour to collaborate and create such a meaningful event.”

On the other side of the city, Hamilton Gurdwara also hosted its own grand Vaisakhi celebration, which drew families and individuals from across Leicester. The Gurdwara grounds were transformed into a lively festival, complete with a funfair for children, an ice cream van, and stalls from various organisations, including the NHS, the Royal Air Force, and Leicestershire Police.
The event provided a unique opportunity for visitors to engage with these organisations while enjoying the festive atmosphere. From shopping for jewellery and clothing to savouring delicious food, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

One of the highlights of the Hamilton Gurdwara celebration was the participation of Leicestershire Police officer Martin Sneath, who donned a turban for the first time as a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Sikh community. His warm engagement with attendees, regardless of age or background, made him a crowd favourite. Visitors were thrilled to take selfies with Officer Sneath, who became a symbol of community harmony and inclusion.

The festivities at Hamilton Gurdwara concluded with a breathtaking fireworks display, which lit up the night sky and was witnessed by hundreds of attendees. The dazzling show marked the perfect end to a day filled with joy, cultural pride, and community spirit.

Leicester’s Vaisakhi celebrations this year were a testament to the city’s rich diversity and the strength of its community bonds. Events at both Highcross’ John Lewis and New Hamilton Gurdwara not only honoured Sikh traditions but also provided a platform for learning, collaboration, and mutual respect among people of all backgrounds.
As Vaisakhi celebrates the harvest season and the birth of the Khalsa, these events in Leicester reminded everyone of the importance of unity, generosity, and cultural appreciation. The city truly came together to make this year’s Vaisakhi a memorable and meaningful celebration for all.
