MAIN ROUTE INTO LEICESTER CLOSED FOR EMERGENCY REPAIR WORK

One of the busiest routes into Leicester is set to be blocked this week, after a sinkhole opened up on the city’s inner ring road.

Drivers are being warned of diversions and possible delays from today until the end of the week (Wednesday, August 17-19), while emergency works are carried out on Infirmary Road, which connected Aylestone Road and Oxford Street near Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The busy route will be closed to all traffic to allow Severn Trent to carry out emergency repairs on a hole which has opened up on the road.

Diversions will be in place sending traffic heading into the city centre from Aylestone Road all the way back around the ring road.

Leicester Area Traffic Control said that the traffic will be diverted along Welford Road, Tigers Way, Waterloo Way and St Georges Way. It warned motorists to “expect long delays” and to allow extra time for their journeys.

A Severn Trent spokesperson said: “We gave been notified of a sinkhole that has developed on Infirmary Road in Leicester and our engineers will be on site to assess the cause and make repairs if necessary.”

The closure is expected to remain in place until Friday lunchtime (August 19) to ensure the work can be carried out safely.
