An up and coming Leicestershire musician has seen his star rise even further after one of his songs was played on ITV’s Love Island, showcasing his talent to millions.
Sekou’s ballad ‘Better Man’ was played on the hit TV show last week, during a dramatic recoupling at Casa Amore.
The soulful track set in as Tyrique was asked if he wanted to stay loyal to fellow Islander Ella, or if he wanted to recouple with one of the islands newest arrivals, Tink, Gabby or Danielle.
The exposure could become a breakthrough moment for Sekou, as previous songs played on Love Island have capitulated artists to fame. Freya Ridings came to the attention of millions after her song ‘Lost Without You’ was played on the reality show a few years back.
Reacting to the song’s airing, Sekou said: “Never in my life would I think I would hear my own song on national TV, this is crazy.
“I remember watching Love Island when I was at Ivanhoe and Ashby School growing up with my mum and now a few years later starting to come up on the music scene and I had my song on the TV. It’s mental.”
Better Man is the lead single from Sekou’s debut EP, which was released last month.
The singer, 18, was signed to Good Soldier Records in 2021, after a string of impressive TikTok performances captured the attention of numerous record labels.
He grew up in the Leicestershire town of Ashby, before moving to London, where he is currently based.
He will be performing a sold-out show there at the end of the month.
