Residents urged to ‘Walk This May’ for mental health

Residents across Leicestershire are being encouraged to take some walking exercise as part of the ‘Walk This May’ national campaign.

Council walk leaders are highlighting the benefits of walking and getting out and about with like-minded people and have a range of guided walks that residents can join free-of-charge.

Adding a little more activity into a daily routine can have a huge impact on mental and physical wellbeing.

Walking is a simple, free way to develop and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. Along with physical benefits such as reducing your risk of diabetes and high blood pressure, walking can also improve your mental health and reduce stress.

Want to get involved? A series of free guided regular walks are available, all welcome:

  • Tuesday, 10am, Rectory Lane Car Park, Market Bosworth, moderate pace and lasting an hour. Please be aware car parking charges apply.
  • Wednesday, 10am Acorns Café. Two walks available. First walk is for half an hour at 10 am and walk two is at 11am for half an hour.? Both walks are accessible and are easy paced.
  • Thursday, 10am Groby Village Hall for a moderate walk lasting one hour.

In addition, as part of Mental Health Awareness Week (13 to 19 May) there will be two additional walks at Burbage Common, on Thursday 16 May at 10am and 11am at a moderate pace for an hour and a half.

Plus, a walk from Desford Library, Main Street at 2pm. The walk is moderate pace, lasting an hour and is not suitable for wheelchair users. No booking is required, just turn up in appropriate clothing, footwear and enjoy.

Executive Member for Leisure at Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, Mark Bools said: “I would encourage everyone who is able to take part in National Walking Month to get outside and visit the wide range of gorgeous nature walks locally.

“As part of our Active Together programme, we have a series of park walks in different locations suitable for the walker just starting out and those who are more experienced.  Take a pet, meet a friend, make new friends, just move a little more and enjoy the benefits that walking can give you.”
