Students at Leicester’s Avanti Fields School have taken part in a 12 hour continuous sports challenge to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The challenge, which took place on Monday (July 15) was undertaken by Sports Ambassadors from the school, who are in year 10. On completing the challenge, they have managed to raise a total of £2,200 for Macmillan Cancer Research, smashing their original target of £500.
The students took part in various sports, including badminton, tennis, volleyball, football, basketball and rounders for a a total of 12 hours.
“The students were amazing and didn’t really stop apart from when substituting off,” explained Vershika Kansara, subject lead for Physical Education at Avanti Fields, who oversaw the challenge.
“They all played every sport and used the dancing/singing as a side activity whilst they had a water break and set up for the next sport. We also had side activities of hula hooping, skipping, rower and a treadmill so it meant that there was someone doing some sort of activity for every minute of the 12 hours. They were incredible and had such resilience especially when they were very tired at around 4pm”.
The challenge was taken up by the students in order to practice the values that Avanti Fields teaches for the benefit of others. It is a faith school which strives for educational excellence as well as character development and spiritual insight.
The money raised will be used to support those affected by cancer. Macmillan Cancer Support helps those diagnosed with the disease to live life as fully as they can, by providing physical, financial and emotional support.
