National Space Centre Launches First-Ever ‘Pay What You Can’ Day

Leicester’s National Space Centre has announced its very first ‘Pay What You Can’ day, giving visitors the opportunity to explore one of the UK’s leading science and discovery attractions during the ongoing cost of living crisis.

The initiative, taking place this Wednesday (June 18), has been created to offer a meaningful day out for individuals and families who may be struggling financially.

‘No forms, no questions – just a a warm welcome and the freedom to pay what you can afford’, that’s the message from the iconic attraction, which sits on the city’s Exploration Drive.

Malika Andress, spokesperson for the National Space Centre, said: “As a charity, we’ve always believed that space should be accessible to all. We recognise that financial challenges are affecting many in our communities, and this is one small step toward opening our doors more widely.”

While the event falls on a Wednesday, a quieter day that may not suit school-aged families, the Centre is deliberately launching this initiative midweek to ensure a calm, manageable environment for first time delivery. The team hopes to learn from the day, with a view to potentially expanding similar events in the future.

The Pay What You Can day is aimed specifically at those facing hardship, and offers an opportunity for respite, joy and inspiration in a time where mental health and wellbeing are under pressure for many.

The Centre is also celebrating a recent win: Silver in the Large Visitor Attraction of the Year category at the VisitEngland Excellence Awards, highlighting the quality and dedication behind every experience on offer, from interactive galleries to the UK’s largest planetarium.

“We’re proud of the world-class experiences we create here in Leicester, and we know the power that a day of discovery can have, especially when it’s needed most. We’re hoping this day helps someone who really needs a lift.”

Tickets cannot be booked in advance and must be purchased upon arrival.

The Centre opens at 10am but you can arrive any time before it closes at 4pm.
