A specialist in computer vision and machine learning, Professor Zhou leads the AI and Machine Learning Group and the Biomedical Image Processing Lab (BIPL). He is also Deputy Director of the AIDAM Research Centre, which develops advanced computational tools to power next-generation AI systems across healthcare, security, space exploration, and the social sciences.
The NAAI award recognises individuals with a sustained, influential impact on AI research and development. Professor Zhou has also contributed significantly to the formation and growth of the Academy, which brings together leading global experts—including Nobel laureates—to advance AI innovation, education, and public understanding.
“It’s an honour to receive this recognition from such a respected institution,” said Professor Zhou. “It reflects the achievements of our university and motivates us to continue our research in AI and machine learning to benefit the wider community.”
Professor Leena Sodha, Head of the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, praised Zhou’s award as a reflection of his pioneering research, leadership, and dedication to mentoring the next generation of AI scientists.
