The National Space Centre’s latest fulldome production, One Step Beyond, is an awe-inspiring and ambitious journey that not only celebrates past space achievements but dares to imagine humanity’s next frontier: Mars.
Visually stunning and emotionally stirring, the show opens with echoes of Apollo and the early space race, then propels viewers into a near-future where astronauts stand poised on the threshold of interplanetary travel. The transition from archival moon landings to vivid, high-definition simulations of Martian landscapes is seamless and breathtaking, made even more immersive by the 360-degree dome and booming surround sound.

Narration (by Leicester born Hollywood star Richard Armitage), strikes a thoughtful balance—scientifically grounded but accessible, offering insights into the technical, ethical, and human challenges of reaching the Red Planet. It’s a film that inspires wonder without glossing over the risks and complexities of space exploration.
While some younger children might find parts intense (particularly the rocket launch sequences), the show is mostly suitable for ages 5 and up. Adults and teens, in particular, will appreciate its forward-thinking message and cinematic flair.
In a fun twist, Ziggy the Astronaut Toy—a playful mascot—is woven into the show’s storytelling, bringing a friendly, imaginative angle to the journey narrative.
Ziggy helps bridge complex scientific concepts with accessible storytelling, making the experience feel whimsical yet grounded.
