Friends and Former Teammates Raise £9,000 in Memory of Dan Hickey Through Charity Bike Ride

A group of friends and former university rugby teammates of Dan Hickey have completed a two-day charity bike ride in his memory, raising an impressive £9,000 to date for The Dan Hickey Fund.

The fund supports young people across the Bristol area through sport and the arts—two of Dan’s greatest passions.

The ride marked the 10th anniversary of Dan’s tragic passing in 2015. Over 20 of his university teammates took part, collectively cycling more than 4,000 miles—far exceeding their original target of 1,857 miles, a number chosen to reflect the average annual number of lives lost on UK roads over the past decade.

The 134-mile journey began on Friday, 1st August 2025, at Stoughton Playing Pitches in Leicester and concluded on Saturday, 2nd August, at Bristol Saracens Rugby Club. There, the riders were warmly welcomed by Dan’s family, friends, and supporters.

Organiser and University of Leicester alumnus James Perrins said: “It was an emotional and physically demanding journey, but one united by a shared goal—to honour Dan’s memory in a way that captured his energy, passion for sport, and sense of team spirit.

I want to thank everyone who made this possible—from our sponsors and kit suppliers to the four incredible support drivers who were with us every mile.

A huge thank you goes to all the riders who pushed themselves and worked tirelessly to raise funds. Their dedication and love for Dan were evident every step of the way.

And finally, thank you to the Hickey family for their unwavering support throughout the ride. They welcomed us with open arms at the finish line, where we joined the Bristol Saracens to celebrate Dan’s life.

The support we’ve received has been overwhelming. We’ve raised £9,000 so far and are hopeful we can reach £10,000 in the coming days.”

All proceeds will go directly toward initiatives that help young people access sporting and creative opportunities—continuing Dan’s legacy and his belief in the transformative power of community, sport, and the arts.
