Loughborough Shop Owner Sentenced to Community Service for Fly-Tipping Offence

A Loughborough business owner has been sentenced to 100 hours of unpaid community service after admitting to a fly-tipping offence in the town.

Mohammed Ahmed Ismail, the owner of Euro Market located on Ward’s End, pleaded guilty at Leicester Magistrates’ Court following a prosecution brought by Charnwood Borough Council.

The case stemmed from a report in October 2024 regarding illegally dumped waste outside flats on Devonshire Lane, behind Granby Street car park. Investigating officers from the Council found evidence linking the waste to Euro Market.

According to the Council, Mr Ismail initially refused to provide his details and declined to attend an interview about the incident. As a result, legal action was pursued.

Appearing in court on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, Mr Ismail admitted responsibility for the fly-tipping. Magistrates sentenced him to 100 hours of unpaid work under a 12-month community order. He was also ordered to pay £584.14 in court costs and a £114 victim surcharge.

Mr Ismail told the court the waste had since been collected and properly disposed of, and assured that his business would not be involved in similar offences in the future. He added that staff had received guidance on correct waste disposal procedures.

Following the sentencing, Councillor Beverley Gray, Charnwood Borough Council’s lead member for climate action and net zero, emphasised the importance of enforcing environmental regulations.

“We take fly-tipping extremely seriously and will continue to take action against those who think it is acceptable to pollute our public spaces with their waste,” she said. “We want Charnwood to be a clean, green borough, and I hope this case sends a clear message that we expect full cooperation when we are working to protect our communities and the local environment.”
