DMU Cybersecurity Expert Named Among World’s Top 2% of Scientists

A leading academic from De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) has been recognised among the top 2% of scientists globally, in a prestigious ranking compiled by Stanford University and academic publisher Elsevier.

Dr Mujeeb Ur Rehman, Associate Professor in DMU’s School of Computer Science and Informatics, earned the distinction for his significant contributions to fields including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data science.

The global list identifies researchers whose work has demonstrated exceptional impact, based on rigorous citation metrics and composite scores across millions of academic publications. Dr Rehman’s inclusion highlights his growing influence in emerging technologies, particularly in the area of post-quantum cryptography — a next-generation data security method designed to resist attacks from future quantum computers.

With over a decade of experience in academia, Dr Rehman has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers and leads pioneering research focused on securing sensitive healthcare data against quantum threats. His project, now in its third phase, is progressing toward commercialisation, with plans underway to launch a spin-out company that will bring the technology to market.

“This recognition is a great honour,” said Dr Rehman. “It reflects the collaborative work of my colleagues and students who are equally passionate about using technology to solve real-world problems.”

Dr Rehman has secured more than £1.5 million in research funding, collaborated on internationally funded initiatives, and contributes to UK research councils as a reviewer. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Senior Member of the IEEE, and an active figure in global research networks.

The Stanford-Elsevier ranking, considered one of the most comprehensive assessments of scientific impact, evaluates both career-long and annual contributions. Dr Rehman’s inclusion reinforces DMU’s growing reputation as a hub for research excellence and technological innovation.
