A large-scale police response was underway in Leicester city centre yesterday evening after emergency services were called to a “very serious incident” at De Montfort University (DMU).
Officers from Leicestershire Police established multiple cordons around the Oxford Street area near The Innovation Centre on the DMU campus from shortly before 6 p.m. on Tuesday 3 February. Roads including Oxford Street at the junction with Grange Lane were closed to both vehicles and pedestrians as officers worked at the scene.

Emergency services, including the police and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, were present throughout the evening. DMU security staff also assisted at the location. Authorities said the closures were expected to remain in place into Wednesday, causing disruption to traffic and pedestrians in the city centre.
A spokesperson for De Montfort University confirmed the institution was cooperating with the police investigation. “We are aware of a very serious incident on our campus this evening,” the statement said. The university added that thoughts were with everyone affected and that support was being offered to students and staff who witnessed the incident.
Leicestershire Police urged the public to avoid the affected area while officers continued their enquiries, but did not disclose further details about the nature of the incident or any individuals involved. As of the latest updates, specific information about what occurred has not been released.
Authorities have not yet indicated when further information — including any potential arrests, injuries, or charges — will be made public. The police presence and cordons underscore the seriousness with which the incident is being treated.
Labour Leicester West MP Liz Kendall has asked people not to speculate in a statement shared on her Facebook page.
“I am aware that a serious incident took place on De Montfort University Campus yesterday evening, and that a police cordon remains in place this morning,” the secretary of state for science, innovation and technology said.
“There are no further details currently and I would urge everyone to refrain from speculating whilst investigations continue.
“De Montfort University are providing support to students and staff who witnessed the event.
“My thoughts are with those affected by what has happened.”
