Police have issued an emotional appeal after a young pygmy goat was stolen from a smallholding in Cropston – leaving its twin behind and in visible distress.
The theft happened overnight on Monday, 16 March 2026, when the goat was taken from a secure enclosure where it had been safely kept with its family. Since then, its twin has been left alone, repeatedly bleating and searching for its missing sibling.

The heartbreaking scene has deeply affected the owner, who says the bond between the two goats was strong and constant. Members of the local rural community have also expressed concern, describing the situation as both upsetting and unusual.
Officers from Leicestershire Police say the emotional impact of the incident has made it all the more urgent to locate the missing animal.
They are urging anyone who may have seen or heard suspicious activity, noticed unfamiliar vehicles or people in the area, or been offered a goat for sale unexpectedly, to come forward.
In a direct plea, officers have also addressed those responsible, urging them to reflect on the distress caused.
“This isn’t just a theft – it has left a young animal calling out for its sibling,” a spokesperson said. “Do the right thing. Return the goat safely or contact us.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting crime reference 26000153881. Reports can also be made anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Police are asking the public to share the appeal widely in the hope of reuniting the young goat with its twin.
