The UK Town of Culture competition recognises towns across the country for their cultural activity and development plans. Up to three finalists are expected to be shortlisted, with the winning town receiving £3 million to deliver a year-long programme. Two runners-up will each receive £250,000.

Market Harborough’s bid, titled The Grand Union, references the town’s history as a regional meeting point, including its medieval market origins and the later development of the Grand Union Canal.

According to the council, the proposal focuses on how cultural investment could support development in rural market towns. It highlights issues including social isolation among older residents and younger people leaving the area for education and employment.

The bid outlines a programme that would include events, skills development opportunities, and projects linked to heritage and digital innovation. It also aims to increase access to cultural activities and involve local communities in planning and delivery.

Cllr Jo Asher, cabinet lead for culture, leisure, economy and tourism, said the bid is intended to support longer-term development and strengthen connections within the community.

The proposal is being developed with input from organisations including Creative Harborough, Harbs Collective, the Market Harborough Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Leicestershire County Council and the Canal & River Trust.

Claire Webb, representing Creative Harborough, said the bid could provide opportunities to expand existing cultural initiatives and attract additional investment if successful.

A decision on shortlisted towns is expected later in the process following submission of expressions of interest.

Loughborough, Coalville, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Hinckley and Melton Mowbray have also entered the contest to win the title.
