Work has officially begun today (Tuesday 7 April) on a new pedestrian and cycle crossing on one of Leicester’s busiest routes.
Leicester City Council is installing a toucan crossing on Aylestone Road, near Hampshire Road and the Aldi supermarket, with construction expected to take around six weeks to complete.

The signal-controlled crossing will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross together, improving safety for those travelling to nearby amenities including Aldi and Granby Primary School.
Traffic restrictions are now in place along a section of Aylestone Road between the Aldi entrance and Duncan Road. The carriageway has been reduced to a single lane, with two-way temporary traffic lights controlling the flow of vehicles.
A full road closure is also planned for Sunday, 12 April, with a signed diversion route via Saffron Lane, Glenhills Way and Lutterworth Road.
The scheme is fully funded by Active Travel England’s Local Transport Fund, which supports safer and more sustainable travel options.
Cllr Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for environment and transport, said: “This investment will provide a new crossing in a busy residential area and help further extend our network of safe routes for walkers, wheelers and cyclists across the city.
“Every effort will be made to minimise disruption, and we thank people for their patience while these works are carried out.”
