Residents across Leicestershire are being encouraged to celebrate the county’s heritage and community spirit this St George’s Day, as council leader Dan Harrison highlights the people and places that make the area special.
In the run-up to 23 April, the leader of Leicestershire County Council has issued a message of thanks to residents, volunteers, carers, foster carers, school staff and emergency services for their everyday contributions.

“St George’s Day is a chance to celebrate the best of our county – our history, our places and the community spirit I see in Leicestershire every day,” he said. “Civic pride isn’t about a single day in the calendar. It’s about the everyday service and the unsung heroes who keep our communities thriving.”
The day, which has been marked in England since at least the early 8th century, will also be recognised through events in towns and villages across the county.
Residents are being encouraged to explore local heritage, including a visit to Bosworth Battlefield, the site of a decisive moment in English history, or to spend time at one of the county’s museums.
Deputy leader Kevin Crook, cabinet lead for heritage and culture, said protecting these assets remains a priority.
“As cabinet lead for heritage and culture, I’m committed to protecting and celebrating the county’s treasures so that future generations can enjoy and learn from them,” he said. “Whether it’s supporting local events, our museums, or simply encouraging communities to fly the flag, my focus is on keeping Leicestershire’s English heritage vibrant and alive.”
Figures from the council show around 1,200 volunteers support services ranging from heritage sites and country parks to school appeals and adult social care. More than 2,500 unpaid carers also play a vital role in helping people manage daily life across the county.
Mr Harrison added: “I want to thank residents and volunteers who give their time in so many ways. That community spirit is something we can all be proud of.”
