“It’s a perfect, gentle introduction to animal rights and well-being, showing small children how animal care has great value not only for animals but for the humans that provide it,” explains the author, who has a degree in Fashion and Printed Textiles from De Montfort University.

The plot follows a hen called ‘Gwen’, who is taken to a free range farm after living in a crowded cage. She becomes to tired to lay eggs but after being taken to her new home, she thrives and gives everyone a ‘wonderful surprise.’

Gwen is also helped to flourish after being given a rainbow coloured vest to keep her warm while her feathers grow back.

The book is published by Otter Barry Books.

Carol has had many award-winning books, including Mommy, Mama and Me, and Daddy, Papa and Me, which were both winners of the Stonewall Honour Picture Book Award, and Thunderboomer, which was a 2010 American Library Association Notable Book, Smithsonian Museum Notable Books for Children and a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year. One.Two.Three, Jump! was included in the Guardian top 10 most inclusive books for children.

Underlying Carol’s work is a belief in the power of picture books and stories to show a child that there is ‘someone else like me!’
