AUTISM FRIENDLY CIRCUS ARRIVING IN LEICESTER AFTER THREE-YEAR HIATUS

An inclusive circus experience is coming to Leicester later this week, which aims to cater for those with sensory issues typical in conditions like Autism and ADHD.

Circus Starr – ‘the circus with a purpose’, will be coming to Braunstone Park Car Park, in Cort Crescent, on Friday (April 29), with two performances taking place on the day; 4.45pm and 7pm.

Described as a “magical community event”, the circus has been touring around the UK for the past 35 years, and is designed for children with disabilities, as well as families on low incomes, those facing challenges such as domestic violence, bereavement or who may be living with a life-limiting condition.

Due to a difficult couple of years, the last time the big top was in the area was in 2019, with their most recent visit being held indoors.

Recently, Circus Starr have partnered with Joanna Grace, a sensory engagement and inclusion specialist from The Sensory Projects, with the aim of helping children with sensory issues like Autism and ADHD prepare for the event in advance.

Together they have created a sensory story and pack, which can assist with a children’s preparation for coming to the show.

“The Circus Starr Sensory Story incorporates sensations that you will feel when you visit our Big Top, helping you know exactly what sensory changes to expect at our magical event,” said a spokesman for Circus Starr, which is a registered charity.

“At Circus Starr it doesn’t matter if a child has a disability, additional learning needs or comes from a disadvantaged background, they are welcome to come and have fun at one of our performances.

“We understand that attending mainstream events can be difficult for children with additional needs or families in difficult circumstances, which is why we’ve created a tut-free zone; a show in which shouting out, dancing and jumping up and down are expected. At our circus, everyone is absolutely encouraged to let go of their worries, get involved, and be themselves”, they added.

“Our shows are accessible and inclusive. This means that we create an environment where families can come along and be themselves, whether it means dancing and shouting out or taking time out if they need to”.

The charity is asking for donations from businesses and members of the public to help it to continue its good work in the community.

Donations can be made from as little as £20.

“After the difficulties that everyone has faced in the past couple of years, we know that an event like ours is needed now more than ever”, added the spokesman.

“We cant wait to fill our Big Top tent with smiles and laughter again. The impact of Coronavirus can be seen in so many ways, so we know that an event like ours in needed now more than ever. We’re looking forward to uniting those who may feel isolated in their community through the magical art of circus, in a safe and inclusive environment.”
