Leicestershire Police are mourning the loss of Police Dog (PD) Jura, who passed away following a courageous battle with gastric torsion.
PD Jura was not only a highly effective operational police dog, but also a source of deep emotional support and inspiration to his handler, PC Darren Sewell.

Jura’s story was one of resilience and unbreakable bond. As a puppy, he trained alongside PC Sewell while the officer was undergoing treatment for stage four cancer. Their weekly sessions served as a source of strength and relief for Darren during his chemotherapy, forging a powerful connection between the pair.
In 2021, defying the odds, PC Sewell and PD Jura were officially licensed as a police dog team—a milestone that symbolised both professional achievement and personal triumph.
PC Sewell was by Jura’s side during his final moments. The devoted handler bid farewell as Jura began his next journey, joining his half-sister, PD Zyla, who was tragically killed in the line of duty in July 2024.
Tributes have poured in from across the force and beyond, recognising Jura’s dedicated service and the unique partnership he shared with PC Sewell.
“Our thoughts are with PC Sewell, his family, and the wider police dog unit at Leicestershire Police,” the force said in a statement. “Rest in peace, PD Jura. Thank you for your service.”
