Popular Bollywood singer Bhargav Kumar Upadhyay is reflecting on his time in Leicester, following a four month tour which saw him drop his new single ‘Sapna Adhura’ – a song about tragic love.
The 33-year-old, arrived in Leicester back in September in a bid to build on the popularity he has amassed in India, and to perform for the masses over the festive period together with his ‘Jungle Band’.
He returns to India today (Wednesday, January 10), with a head full of memories and the intention to return to Leicester in April, due to popular demand.
He dropped his new single -an original song called ‘Sapna Adhura’, (Dreams are Incomplete) on Christmas Day. It is a song about ‘tragic love,’ which was produced by Leicester’s Vijay Hingu.
In the music video for the song, Bhargav showcases his acting skills, playing out the story within its profound lyrics.
“It is a love story, but quite a sad one,” he explained. “It’s about a couple who are in love. They are arranging to meet and the phone cuts off. He thinks that she’s left him but she’s had an accident and has not been able to get in touch because she’s in a coma. So their love story remains incomplete. It’s tragic and bittersweet, but also very beautiful.”He plans to release a follow up within the next few weeks.
During his tour of Leicester, Bhargav had the pleasure of performing at the city’s 40th Diwali lights switch on in front of 30,000 people.
He told the Leicester Times that he felt embraced by the crowds in the city who made him feel ‘right at home’.
“I’ve done Diwali in London [on a previous tour],but Leicester was much more traditional,” he said. “I also did three Navatri performances and they were wonderful. I feel like I’m bringing joy to people’s lives, and that’s the best thing about doing what I do.
“I feel proud because God has given me a gift to make people happy and that’s what’s most important. That’s what drives me forward.”
Bhargav’s latest tour marks his third visit to the UK, and in Leicester he performed at places like the Peepul Centre, De Montfort Hall and Ramgarhia.
As well as singing, Bhargav is also a keen actor, who’s been performing since the age of ten.
His dream is to become a successful Bollywood actor, and he has worked hard to get to where he is today.
“I was born into a middle class family and there is no one in this industry that I know. Finance is a big thing in India. If you’ve got the money you can go forward quite quickly but what I’ve achieved, I’ve had to make it myself,” revealed the singer, who made it to the fourth round of ‘Indian Idol.’
“As for my parents, they support me now I’m starting to make a name for myself. However, when I started out they wanted me to get a more traditional job – be a doctor or something like that. I had to fight to convince them that this is what I really wanted to do, and I believe it is my destiny.”
