Free Zumba taster session invites over-55s to get moving in Leicester

Older residents are being encouraged to start 2026 on an active note with a free Zumba taster class taking place in Leicester later this month.

The session will be held at Friar Lane and Braunstone Baptist Church, this Friday, 9 January, from 10.00am to 11.45am. Open to people aged 55 and over, the event is designed to be a fun, friendly introduction to movement, with no previous dance experience required.

The class forms part of the Get Moving campaign, delivered in partnership with Yakult and First Time for Everything — a community health and well being initiative created by Royal Voluntary Service. The programme gives people the opportunity to try new activities for free in their local area, with a particular focus on supporting those who are older or less mobile to stay active and socially connected.

Local dance instructor Nic Appleton will lead the Zumba session, guiding participants through simple steps and a short routine set to uplifting music. The class is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some dance experience. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided afterwards, giving attendees the chance to relax and socialise.

Reshma Patel, Marketing Manager at Yakult UK and Ireland, said being active can have a significant impact on wellbeing. “Even small increases in physical activity can benefit our health,” she said. “As a long-term partner of Royal Voluntary Service, we’re proud to support the Get Moving campaign and First Time for Everything, helping people discover enjoyable ways to be active, connect with others and support their overall health and wellbeing.”

Places are limited and booking is recommended. To register or find out more, people can contact Royal Voluntary Service activity coordinator Mary Cufflin by emailing mary.cufflin@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk or calling 07771 641113.

For those unable to attend in person, Get Moving with Yakult is also available online through the Virtual Village Hall, a free digital hub created by Royal Voluntary Service to help people stay physically and mentally active while remaining socially connected from home.
