While beloved by the South Asian community, the iconic triangle-shaped snack is believed to have originated in the Middle East, where it was enjoyed by traveling merchants. It’s thought that this is how the tasty treat made its way to other parts of the world, including India and Pakistan, eventually evolving into the beloved South Asian snack we know today.
This marks the eighth year of National Samosa Week in Leicester, an event born from the vision of Romail Gulzar, founder of Pukaar News, a city-based news and media outlet.
He said, “National Samosa Week brings together people from all backgrounds to share in the love for this iconic snack. It’s a celebration of culture, community, and, of course, flavour.”
The week will culminate in a thrilling competition to crown the Samosa King or Queen on April 13, at a local restaurant yet to be confirmed.
Ady Dayman, BBC Radio Leicester presenter, has held the title since 2018, after managing to devour 15 samosas in just ten minutes.
