Gleneagles Bridge Refurbishment to Close Major Leicester Route for 14 Weeks

Drivers in Leicester are being advised to prepare for significant disruption as a major refurbishment project on Gleneagles Bridge will see Gleneagles Avenue closed in both directions for approximately 14 weeks, starting from Sunday, 22 September.

The work, being carried out by Leicester City Council, is essential to address wear and tear on the aging bridge structure and will be completed in two key phases.

Major Maintenance Works Planned

The first phase, running from 22 September to around 5 December, will involve:

  • Re-waterproofing the bridge deck
  • Resurfacing the road
  • Repointing of brickwork
  • Concrete repairs
  • Removal of grass verges, which will be replaced with more durable concrete

The second phase, expected to run until 29 December, will focus on replacing several deteriorating concrete carriageway slabs with new tarmac surfacing.

Martin Fletcher, Leicester City Council’s Director of Highways, said the work is necessary to ensure the safety and longevity of the bridge.

“The bridge requires major maintenance works to renew parts which are now in poor condition and require improvement,” he said. “We will be doing all we can to minimise disruption, and we thank road users and residents for their patience during this essential project.”

Pedestrian Access and Local Impact

Although Gleneagles Avenue will be closed to vehicles throughout the project, pedestrian access will be maintained where it is safe to do so. However, the council has warned that some footpaths and pedestrian routes may be restricted during periods of active work.

Residents and nearby businesses have also been notified of temporary parking and loading restrictions that may be introduced on surrounding roads and parking bays. These measures are designed to keep traffic flowing and allow construction vehicles to access the site.

Diversion Routes in Place

Clearly signposted diversion routes will be in place throughout both phases of the project:

Phase One Diversions (22 Sept – 5 Dec):

  • Clockwise: Gleneagles Avenue ? Roseway ? Peebles Way ? Roseneath Avenue ? Wyvern Avenue ? Gleneagles Avenue
  • Anti-clockwise: Reverse of the above
  • Alternative Route: Gleneagles Avenue ? Roseway ? Peebles Way ? Roseneath Avenue ? Glenmore Road ? Kerrysdale Avenue ? Gleneagles Avenue (reverse for anti-clockwise)

Phase Two Diversions (5 Dec – 29 Dec):

  • Clockwise: Gleneagles Avenue ? Peebles Way ? Roseway ? Gleneagles Avenue
  • Anti-clockwise: Reverse of the above

Advance warning signs will be installed in the area ahead of the closure, and updates will be provided as the work progresses.
