Iconic Leicester shoe store confirms closure

Iconic shoe store ‘Blunts Shoes’ which has served Leicester for the past 40 years has confirmed its impending closure later this year.

Blunts Shoes, which sits on Granby Street has posted the news that it is to close in March, citing a ‘fall in footfall’ as the reason behind the decision.

The store has been in Leicester since the 80s, and achieved legendary status in 2023, after singer James Blunt posed outside the store. The ‘You’re Beautiful’ star was in the city to perform at BBC Radio 2 in the Park, and was playing along with a joke which had developed thanks to a missing letter on the store’s logo.

He had become aware of the shop back in 2017 after a fan sent him a picture of Blunts Shoes after the S came off the sign, so that it read “Blunts hoes”. James shared the image on Twitter in 2017, writing: “Dis where I get ma hoes” and earned himself more than 61,000 likes.

He is not related to the business in any way.

Writing online, Jazmin Blunt from Blunts head office thanked customers and urged people to support the store up until its closure.

“After 40 wonderful years, we are sad to announce the closing of our Blunts Shoes Leicester store. It has been an honour to serve this community, and we are truly grateful for your support and loyalty over the years,” she said.

“Please continue to support us at our Blunts Shoes Leicester Store, 128-132 Granby St, Leicester, LE1 6FD which is confirmed to close at the end of March.”
