Over 30,000 people attended last night’s Leicester 2023 Diwali celebration, which featured 6,000 spectacular coloured lights and a series of amazing dance and musical acts. The crowds swayed and chanted to the raucous Bhangra music, with stages on both Melton Road and Cossington Park.
Chief Constable of Leicestershire Police Rob Nixon was there in person and said: “It’s always a very special event in our calendar because it brings together people from all communities. We know that people travel internationally to come to this celebration, the atmosphere, the friendly nature of people, for those that have not been to Diwali, please come to Leicester and enjoy Diwali.”
The traditional Rangoli exhibition held in the Belgrave Community Centre was very popular, and Belgrave Road was lined with shops and stalls selling a huge variety of chaat, Asian cuisine, and international food as well.
The lights will be kept on until November 12 when there will be a celebration for Diwali Day.
