Leicester Residents Invited to Suggest Locations for New Cycle Hangars in Citywide Pilot Scheme

Leicester City Council is calling on residents to help identify suitable locations for a new network of on-street cycle hangars, as part of a pilot project aimed at improving secure bike storage in residential areas.

The council plans to install 10 cycle hangars across the city, offering safe and convenient parking for people who may not have space to store bikes at home. Each hangar will accommodate up to six bicycles and will occupy roughly the same space as a single parked car.

An online survey has been launched to gather feedback and location suggestions from the public. The initiative specifically targets residential areas, with the cycle hangars reserved solely for local residents—not for businesses or workplaces.

As part of the consultation, the council is also seeking input on what residents might be willing to pay to reserve a space in a nearby secure cycle hangar.

The pilot scheme is backed by £50,000 in funding and is scheduled for rollout in spring 2026.

Cllr Geoff Whittle, Assistant City Mayor for Transport and Environment, said: “We’re pleased to be rolling out this cycle hangar pilot scheme. Secure cycle parking is a key part of encouraging more people to choose cycling for everyday journeys.

“We hope the new hangars will make it easier for people to store bikes safely and conveniently close to their homes, especially where indoor space is limited. It’s important that we identify the right locations to trial the new cycle hangars, and that’s why we’re asking residents for their ideas and suggestions.”

Residents can submit their views by completing the online survey at www.leicester.gov.uk/consultations.

The consultation will remain open until Monday, 17 November 2025.
