Leicester to Mark Holocaust Memorial Day with City Commemoration Event

Victims of genocides around the world will be remembered at Leicester’s Holocaust Memorial Day event taking place tomorrow (Tuesday, 27 January).

The annual commemoration will honour the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust, alongside those killed in later genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

The Lord Mayor of Leicester, Cllr Teresa Aldred, will join local dignitaries, students and members of the public at De Montfort University for an evening of reflection and remembrance.

As part of the programme, students from Beauchamp College will share their experiences of visiting Auschwitz. The event will also feature musical performances by Caroline Salinger and a keynote address on this year’s theme, Bridging Generations, delivered by Professor Aubrey Newman, former director of the Stanley Burton Centre for Holocaust and Genocide Studies.

Winning entries from the Paul Winstone Memorial schools’ essay-writing competition will be read aloud during the evening.

Cllr Aldred said Holocaust Memorial Day provides an important opportunity to remember those who lost their lives in genocides and atrocities worldwide. She added that it also serves as a reminder that hatred and extreme violence continue to cause suffering today, underscoring the responsibility to remember, educate and work towards a future free from such crimes.

The event will take place in the Hugh Aston Building (building 22) at De Montfort University, starting at 7pm. Attendance is free and open to all.

Parking will be available in the university’s staff and visitor car park (building 38) at a cost of £2 per vehicle.
