Leicestershire Libraries Celebrate National Year of Reading with Free Events in 2026

Leicestershire County Council is set to host a full calendar of free events and activities across its libraries throughout 2026, marking the National Year of Reading.

The initiative aims to inspire people of all ages to explore the joys of reading and celebrate the transformative power of books.

The year began with a lively series of music, puppet shows, and sensory play sessions for children under five, held at libraries in Melton, Wigston, and Loughborough. The sessions are designed to introduce young children to stories in engaging and interactive ways, helping to spark a lifelong love of reading.

Councillor Kevin Crook, cabinet member for libraries, said: “Reading is at the heart of learning and imagination. The National Year of Reading gives us a fantastic opportunity to showcase the wealth of resources and activities our libraries provide. Whether it’s storytime for toddlers, summer reading challenges for children, or book clubs for adults, there’s something for everyone.”

The year-long programme will feature events for all ages, supporting the National Literacy Trust and the Reading Agency’s campaign, which encourages people to read about topics that interest and inspire them. From workshops and author talks to interactive family sessions, the libraries aim to make reading accessible, enjoyable, and fun.

Leicestershire’s libraries offer a broad range of services both in person and online, including physical books, e-books, e-audiobooks, and e-magazines. For young children, the libraries provide sessions such as Wriggly Readers, a weekly story and rhyme session for children up to five years old. Seasonal reading challenges during the summer and winter holidays also encourage children to maintain their reading habits outside of school.

Beyond books, libraries serve as community hubs, hosting events that promote literacy, creativity, and connection. Whether families want to attend story sessions, adults want to join book clubs, or teenagers are looking for resources for school projects, the libraries offer support for readers of all levels and interests.

Residents can find more information about joining Leicestershire Libraries on the Libraries page. A full listing of upcoming events and activities will be regularly updated on the libraries’ Facebook and Instagram pages.

With 2026 designated the National Year of Reading, Leicestershire County Council’s libraries are ready to open their doors and welcome the community to celebrate the power of stories, one book at a time.
