Leicestershire Man Jailed for Taking Driving Theory Tests on Behalf of Others

A 28-year-old man from Leicestershire has been sentenced to prison after it was discovered he had been taking driving theory tests on behalf of other people.

Aaron Kumar, formerly of Oadby, Leicester, pleaded guilty to six counts of fraud by false representation at Northampton Crown Court.

The fraudulent activity took place between 2021 and 2024 across various locations, including Corby, Northampton, Derby, Grantham, Wolverhampton, and Sutton Coldfield. Kumar charged his clients £250, plus additional expenses, for taking the tests on their behalf.

His scheme came to an end on January 15, 2024, when staff at the Corby Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) centre recognized him and alerted the police. Officers found Kumar in the middle of completing a test. When asked if he had used his real name, he initially affirmed but then quickly admitted his true identity when confronted.

Kumar was arrested and charged with six offences. After pleading guilty at an earlier hearing, he was sentenced to one year and ten months in prison at Northampton Crown Court on February 21.

Investigating officer PC Harry Cory commented, “I’m glad Aaron Kumar has been jailed as it highlights that economic crime doesn’t pay, and justice will eventually prevail. I hope he reflects on his actions while in prison and makes better choices upon his release.”

He added, “Those who paid Kumar to take these tests should be ashamed. The driving theory test is in place for a reason, and attempting to bypass it is disgraceful. Driving is a privilege earned through both theory and practical exams, and no one should be able to skip either.”
