The bench, affectionately named “Billy’s Bench”, features a commemorative plaque recognising Billy’s dedication and contribution to the local community. The plaque reads:
Billy’s Bench
In memory of William ‘Billy’ Kimpton
7/8/52 – 22/10/25
‘The town’s much-loved street cleaner’
Karen Kimpton, Billy’s niece, joined Harborough District Council Chairman Cllr Peter James to sit on the new bench in The Square during the official unveiling on 17 February 2026. The ceremony was attended by members of Billy’s family and council representatives.
The bench forms part of a broader town centre improvement scheme, which will see eight new benches installed, worn seating replaced, and public spaces enhanced for accessibility and quality.
“This bench recognises the contribution made by a dedicated member of our local community,” said Cllr James. “Alongside wider improvements to town centre seating, it ensures that his service is formally acknowledged and remembered.”
The project is funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), supporting local place improvements and fostering community pride. The bench offers residents and visitors a permanent place to pause, reflect, and remember Billy’s role in daily life in Market Harborough.
