‘No more hills to climb’ for Leicester cyclist who lost battle with mental health

The community is mourning the tragic loss of Tim McKenna, a beloved advocate for mental health awareness and an adventurer known for his inspiring cycling journeys.

Tim was a passionate advocate for mental health, dedicating much of his life to raising awareness and supporting mental health charities. He worked tirelessly to increase visibility for organisations that helped people facing similar struggles, and his advocacy efforts were a testament to his personal commitment to breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health. His work, both personal and professional, made a significant difference in the lives of many, and he was known for his openness and compassion when discussing his own experiences.

In addition to his advocacy, Tim was an avid cyclist who embarked on several incredible journeys around the world. From cycling along the coast of Great Britain to the West Coast of the United States, from London to Istanbul, throughout Scandinavia, and most recently around Morocco, Tim’s adventures were as diverse as they were inspiring.

Friends and family recall Tim’s enthusiasm and determination as he set off on these long, difficult rides, always carrying the weight of his gear, tent, and belongings. His dedication to each journey, no matter the physical challenge, was a reflection of his unwavering spirit.

“He was a big guy, and the weight of his bike before a trip was unbelievable. Yet somehow, Tim always managed to make it work and power through, even on the steepest of hills,” said Matt Sutton, a close friend of Tim’s who accompanied him on several of these adventures.

Tim’s travels weren’t just about the places he visited, but the people he met along the way. Through his captivating photographs and stories, Tim inspired individuals all over the world. His updates, often shared with the community, were filled with warmth and adventure. Many supporters contributed small donations to help Tim on his travels, ensuring that he could rest or enjoy a meal when the weather turned harsh.

“I’ve received so many messages from people who were touched by Tim’s journey. His stories brought people together and gave them a sense of connection,” said Sutton.

While Tim’s passion for cycling and mental health advocacy defined much of his life, his most cherished role was that of a father to his 17-year-old daughter, Amelia. Tim often spoke with immense pride about his daughter, sharing stories of their special moments together. Whether it was sending her postcards from his travels or simply enjoying quality time together, the bond between Tim and Amelia was undeniable.

“She was his world,” Sutton said. “Tim’s love for Amelia was boundless. He was so proud of everything she did, and he made sure she knew it every chance he got.”

In the wake of Tim’s passing, his friends and family have come together to support his daughter Amelia and honour Tim’s legacy. A fundraising campaign has been launched to cover Tim’s funeral expenses and provide ongoing support for Amelia.

“We want to make sure that Amelia has everything she needs and that Tim’s memory is celebrated in the way he deserves,” Sutton said.

“If Tim’s adventures, photos, or stories ever touched your life, we ask that you consider contributing to this cause.”

Details of a service and celebration of Tim’s life will be shared with the public in the coming weeks, where friends, family, and supporters will gather to remember the man who touched so many lives.

Tim McKenna’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, his advocacy for mental health, and the many lives he touched with his generosity, kindness, and adventurous spirit.

As Sutton so poignantly stated, “Rest well, big man. May the wind now always be at your back. No more hills to climb.”
