Vibrant Pride Paddle Takes Place at Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre

On Saturday, June 14, the Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre (LOPC) hosted a ‘Pride Paddle’, bringing colour, joy, and community spirit to the River Soar.

Around 50 participants took part in the free event, paddling canoes from the LOPC base on Loughborough Road to the iconic National Space Centre — a journey filled with laughter, pride, and a powerful message of inclusivity.

Participants showed up in full force dressed in their brightest rainbow colours, adding vibrant energy to the day. Rainbow face paints and temporary tattoos were freely available, helping everyone get into the Pride spirit both on and off the water.

The event was more than just a fun paddle — it was a celebration of identity, belonging, and visibility for Leicester’s LGBTQ+ community and allies. It aimed to create a welcoming, safe, and joyful environment, reinforcing the message that outdoor and paddle sports are for everyone, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.

“Pride is more than a celebration — it’s a powerful reminder that everyone deserves to feel seen, valued, and safe in every space, including outdoor and paddle sports,” said Hayley Smitham-Hopewel, manager at LOPC.

“There was so much joy, laughter, and pride on the water and it was great to see people having fun and embracing the experience.

“It was about bringing people together to celebrate, and showing everyone that everything is accessible at Leicester Outdoor Pursuit Centre. It shouldn’t matter who you are, you’re welcome here.”

The Pride Paddle is part of a broader movement to make the outdoors more inclusive and accessible to all. For those who enjoyed the day or are curious to get involved, the centre runs a fortnightly queer outdoors session, offering a regular opportunity to connect with nature, build skills, and foster community.
