UPPINGHAM NAMED ‘BEST PLACE TO LIVE’ IN THE MIDLANDS

The picturesque market town of Uppingham has been declared the Midlands Winner in the annual Sunday Times ‘Best Places to Live’ survey.

The town in Rutland has been named as the top choice by the the paper, with ‘the extraordinary’ Goldmark Gallery figuring highly on the list of reasons given for the choice.

With its “honey-coloured houses,” “quaint old market square”, and cobbled streets, the Rutland town of Uppingham, is described as “a feast for the eyes at every turn”, in an article published earlier this week.

It also points to the town’s high street, as one of its major selling points, which is “nicely traditional with a dash of sophistication”.

“It has two excellent butchers and the delightful Baines Bakery, selling sandwiches, doughnuts and loaves like they used to be”, said Tim Palmer in his piece for the Sunday Times, published on April 8.

“An antiquarian bookseller, luthier and a clockmaker complete the olde-worlde atmosphere. On the other hand, the Scandimania bakery and café serves cinnamon buns that are bang on trend, and Orb is a beauty salon that focuses on up-to-the-minute organic products. All the essentials are here, with a chemist, Co-op and a gem of a hardware store in D Norton & Son”.

Much is also written of the town’s Goldmark Gallery, which sits in the town’s Orange Street.

“In no other small town can you stumble a few steps from your door and gaze at etchings by Kandinsky, original prints by Picasso and ever-changing displays of works by artists that you’d normally have to take a city break to see”, writes Mr Palmer.

Responding to the high praise, Jay Goldmark, owner of Goldmark Gallery, said: “The Sunday Times survey of the best places to live in the UK is the most authoritative of its kind and all of us at Goldmark are delighted that Uppingham has received this accolade.

“Goldmark Gallery has had lots of congratulatory messages  from our clients and friends  – both in the the UK and internationally – so the reach of the article is evidently huge.

“It has been a good week for the Gallery as our film unit has been shortlisted for two awards  [today 13 April]  by the Royal Television Society [East],” he added.

“I am looking forward to toasting this double recognition of the gallery and its dedicated and talented team at the opening of our newest exhibition on Easter Saturday“.
