‘Snow White’ at De Montfort Hall – Review

Tash Bacarese-Hamilton plays the starring role in ‘Snow White’ – the Christmas pantomime which is currently delighting audiences at Leicester’s De Montfort Hall.

The well known story is given a magical makeover – magical songs, plenty of sparkle and rib tickling humour to delight children and adults a like.

Comedian Jarred Christmas makes his fourth consecutive appearance in a De Montfort Hall panto – serving up plenty of warmth, hospitality and witty wisecracks as ‘Muddles the Jester.’

As well as humour, there were also some brilliant musical numbers throughout, a highlight being Sam Bailey’s duet with Divina De Campo.

The Leicester native was able to show her stunning vocal range as the ‘Spirit of the Mirror’ whilst De Campo (of RuPaul’s Drag Race fame), served up a magnificent performance as the Evil Queen, Queen Morgiana.

The character of Snow White was played superbly by Tash Bacarese-Hamilton, and after speaking with her backstage, it’s clear that she relishes her role on stage, which seems to fit her like a glove.

“This evening has been magical – the audience was amazing. I could see all the little girls jumping up and down and all the mum’s and dads having a laugh,” she told the Leicester Times.

“The audiences make the panto what it is. The sound of the kids cheering is just why we do it really. Every show is different – you never know what audience you’re going to get, so you’ve got to kind of second guess what they’re going to do and really think on your feet, which I love.

“If you come and watch ‘Snow white’, you’ll have a laugh, the costumes are amazing, the people are amazing and you’ll come away with a huge smile on your face,” she adds.

So what do audiences think?

Toni Clifford was one of those in attendance. “I’ll give it 9 and 3/4 (out of ten),” she says.

“Pantos are just so fun and this one definitely feels festive. There are plenty of great interactive parts. A highlight for me was the ’12 Days of Christmas’ when they’re squirting water and throwing toilet rolls into the audience. It’s just crazy, crazy fun!

“As for my favourite character – it was definitely the Evil Queen. she was so funny and I love all the booing – all of the costumes and all of the fabulousness.”

Hinesh Ganda also scored it highly – giving it a generous 9.5 out of ten.

“Tonight’s show was fantastic – amazing performances, really vibrant, so much going on and entertainment for everyone,” he said.

“It’s a long time since I’ve been to a panto – I was probably a child last time I came. Panto’s definitely levelled up a bit because the performances were brilliant and the singing, production, everything was top level.”

Snow White runs at De Montfort Hall until Sunday, January 5.
