Construction work to transform a sheltered housing complex in Thurmaston into nine new bungalows is set to begin this month.
Charnwood Borough Council has selected Mercer Building Solutions, a Leicestershire-based construction firm, to carry out the redevelopment.

The first phase of the £2 million project will involve demolishing the existing buildings, set to start in late February. The development is expected to be completed by early 2026.
The new bungalows will be specifically designed for individuals with mobility challenges.
St Michael’s Court, built around 1970, no longer meets the needs of older tenants. The complex, primarily consisting of bedsits with shared bathrooms, has struggled to attract tenants. Additionally, the long corridors present difficulties for people with mobility issues.
Cllr Colin Hamilton, the Council’s lead member for planning and housing, expressed his enthusiasm for the project: “I am pleased that the contract with Mercer Building Solutions is in place, and we look forward to working with them on this important redevelopment. It will be exciting to see the creation of nine new bungalows in Thurmaston, and I am confident that Mercer will provide excellent accommodation, ensuring a high-quality standard of living for residents.”
Katy Mercer, Director of Mercer Building Solutions, shared her excitement as well: “We are thrilled to collaborate with Charnwood Borough Council on this project to provide nine bungalows designed specifically for people with mobility challenges. This initiative aligns with our commitment to delivering much-needed, accessible, and high-quality homes. We are proud to be part of such an important development and look forward to seeing these homes offer a safe and supportive environment for their future residents.”
Both Mercer and Charnwood Borough Council are keeping local businesses and residents informed with hand-delivered letters and regular email updates.
