A major shake-up has been announced at Topps Tiles, with the Leicester-based company confirming plans to close 23 stores across the UK in a cost-cutting drive.
The business, headquartered in Enderby, Leicestershire, said the closures form part of “significant self-help measures” aimed at improving profitability amid a challenging retail climate.

Topps Tiles – one of Britain’s largest tile specialists – has been a long-standing part of the Leicester business landscape since its founding in 1963. The latest announcement therefore represents a notable moment for the region, even though the closures are spread nationwide rather than focused solely on the city.
The company said the affected sites are underperforming, with eight stores already shut and the remaining closures expected over the next six months.
While it is not yet confirmed whether any Leicester stores will close, the decision will inevitably raise concerns locally given the company’s deep roots in Leicestershire and its role as a major regional employer.
Around 1,800 people work for the retailer across the UK, and the company has said it will attempt to redeploy staff where possible.
Industry observers say the move reflects wider pressures facing retailers both locally and nationally, with high street businesses continuing to grapple with rising costs, inflation and shifting consumer habits.
Topps Tiles pointed to a slowdown in the home improvement and DIY sector, with customers cutting back on discretionary spending such as renovation.
The company reported a slight dip in revenues to £142.7 million in its latest half-year results, highlighting the impact of weaker demand.
Chief executive Alex Jensen said the closures are part of a broader plan to strengthen the company’s financial position over the coming years.
The announcement adds to a growing list of retail closures across the UK in 2026, as businesses adapt to changing shopping habits and economic uncertainty.
Topps Tiles said further details on which stores will be affected will be confirmed in due course.
