Traffic lights to be installed at busy Leicestershire crossroads amid safety concerns

Work to improve safety and ease traffic flow at a busy Leicestershire junction will begin on Monday 2 February, with the installation of four-way traffic lights.

The crossroads where the B591 meets Charley Road, near Copt Oak, is set for major changes following rising traffic levels and ongoing safety concerns. Leicestershire County Council has identified the junction as a priority site for improvement after reviewing collision data in its Annual Road Safety Report.

Drivers have reported frequent problems with vehicles failing to give way at the crossroads, leading to accidents and congestion. While earlier measures helped reduce incidents, the council says continued collisions and increasing traffic volumes mean further action is needed.

After considering a range of options, the council concluded that installing traffic signals on all four approaches was the most effective solution. The scheme will also include improved signage and new street lighting to make the junction safer and easier to navigate.

Councillor Adam Tilbury said collision statistics had been closely reviewed and detailed observations carried out at the site.

“Installing traffic signals will allow for safer, controlled turning movements from all arms of the junction,” he said. “We would like to thank motorists and residents for their patience during these essential works, which will deliver long-term safety benefits for all road users.”

The work is expected to take around eight weeks, and drivers should expect some delays while it is carried out. Once completed, journeys may take slightly longer at peak times, but the improvements are expected to manage traffic more effectively as volumes continue to rise.

Funding for the scheme has been secured through the council’s capital budget.
