Injured Lurcher dogs found abandoned down a Leicestershire lane

The RSPCA is appealing for information after two injured and sick dogs were found abandoned down a country lane in Leicestershire.

The dogs – both Lurchers, were found at Longhedge Lane in Orston, near Bottesford, on the evening of Monday 3 February at around 9pm.

Thankfully the pair were rescued by a kind-hearted member of the public who managed to catch the frightened duo and took them immediately to an emergency vet for treatment.

The dogs had untreated wounds and were in a poor body condition and the male lurcher had a swollen leg. Both dogs were given antibiotics and pain relief at the vets and have now been transferred into the care of RSPCA Radcliffe Animal Centre.

One of the Lurchers is male around one to two years old and is in the poorest condition – he has been called Doug.

The other dog is female and around five years old and she was chipped and her name registered as Jazz.

Ella Carpenter, Animal Centre Manager, said: “Both dogs are currently receiving veterinary care for numerous wounds, pressure sores and their general skin condition.

“They are both malnourished, especially Doug and their condition suggests they have been in a neglected state for some time. “They are likely to need treatment for several weeks but are responding well and now wagging their tails, becoming more curious.”

RSPCA Inspector Kate Burris is investigating the incident and said: “It’s heartbreaking to see the condition both these dogs had been left in – and then on top of that they are just abandoned at night in a remote area.

“We are so grateful to the member of the public who spent a long time trying to catch the dogs and then took them to a place of safety at the vets.

“The only way to describe the condition of the dogs was that they were a mess – they had untreated wounds and were in a poor condition.

I’m just grateful they are now in a place of safety at Radcliffe and hopefully with their expert care they will continue to improve.

“The female dog was microchipped and I have spoken to the previous owner who said they gave her away two years ago.

“Therefore I am appealing to anyone who has information about these abandoned dogs to call the RSPCA’s appeals line on 0300 123 8018 quoting incident – 01442140.

“I am keen to speak to anyone who may know who owned these dogs or may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area on the night they were found.”

Ella added: “The dogs are settling in and being given plenty of attention. We are confident that both dogs will make a full recovery and we look forward to updating everyone on their progress, before finding them new homes.”
