Two long-serving Leicestershire volunteers, have been recognised for their outstanding commitment to volunteering with a special invitation to attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace this month.
Jean Lee, 95, and Jennifer Rider, 84, have dedicated decades of their retirement to supporting Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland’s charity shops and communities. Their selfless service and enthusiasm have made a lasting difference, not only to the organisation but also to countless customers and fellow volunteers they’ve worked alongside.

Jean Lee has been a familiar face in Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland’s Loughborough shop for over 30 years. A retired physiotherapist, Mrs Lee said that after spending a lifetime speaking to and caring for her patients, she wanted to continue helping people through volunteering. Her energy and sense of purpose remain as strong as ever. “I’m here to prove that you’re never too old to volunteer,” she added with a smile.
Meanwhile, Jennifer Rider, who has volunteered in the charity’s Uppingham shop for the past 25 years, began shortly after retiring from her role as a GP’s receptionist. “I was so used to being around people,” she said. “I thought retail would give me that same sense of company and fun… it really has.” A lifelong Rutland resident, Jennifer claims she is “so grateful to be nominated.”

Tony Donovan, Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, expressed his pride in the recognition:
“I am absolutely delighted that the decades of dedicated voluntary service given by Mrs Lee and Mrs Rider are being recognised in such a special way. Their unwavering commitment is testament to how volunteering after retirement is a fantastic way to find fulfilment in later life. Both invitations to Buckingham Palace are a truly fitting tribute to their remarkable contributions and I sincerely thank them both for their continued service.”
Hosted by King Charles III, only two garden parties are held each year at Buckingham Palace, each welcoming guests from all walks of life. Nominations come from the government, armed services, charities, and other organisations.
Once inside the gardens, which are not open to the public, guests enjoy music from military bands, afternoon tea, and the chance to meet members of the Royal Family. These special occasions celebrate achievements from across the UK, making it a truly memorable, once in a lifetime experience.
