The secret to a long and happy life? “Red wine and fresh air,” according to Margery Jacobs, a Leicestershire resident who recently celebrated her 103rd birthday.
Margery, who lives at Care UK’s Oat Hill Mews on Leicester Road, shared her pearls of wisdom while marking the latest milestone in her remarkable life.

To honour her special day, a cheerful celebration was held at the home, complete with balloons, banners, and a delicious cake, organised by her family and the care team.
Surrounded by loved ones, Margery reflected on her longevity and said, “It’s important to always have a positive mental attitude and to care for others more than yourself.
And of course—enjoy plenty of red wine and fresh air!”
Born on 1st June 1922, Margery was the youngest of five children and largely raised by her eldest sister. After finishing secondary school, she worked as a clerical assistant during the Second World War.
She later met and married Ronald, and together they enjoyed many happy years. Their life took them to various towns across the country—Eastbourne, Harrogate, Solihull, and Henley-in-Arden—gathering friends wherever they went. The couple raised two children, and today Margery delights in spending time with her grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Margery lived independently until August last year, when she moved into Oat Hill Mews. She remains an avid reader and poetry lover, especially fond of Shakespeare and John Betjeman, and cherishes time spent outdoors in the garden.
Susanne Stevens, Home Manager at Oat Hill Mews, said: “Margery is a very intelligent and thoughtful lady, full of fascinating stories.
She’s a much-loved member of our community, and it was a real joy to celebrate this incredible milestone with her—and to hear her inspiring advice for living a full and joyful life.”
