Plans to Replace Blaby Golf Centre with Housing Rejected

A proposal to shut down Blaby Golf Centre and build up to 200 homes on the site has been turned down by Blaby District Council.

The council’s planning committee rejected the outline application submitted by Hallam Land Management, following a recommendation from planning officers to refuse the scheme. The proposal also drew over 1,700 objections from local residents.

While the plan aimed to deliver much-needed housing, officers argued that the loss of 16 hectares of designated Green Wedge land would be “inherently harmful.” They also raised concerns over inadequate plans to relocate several small businesses currently operating on the site, including a dance school, gym, taxi rank, boutique, and beauty salon.

Councillor Lee Breckon, chair of the planning committee, said: “Refusing a planning application is not something we do lightly. We have a duty to support housing supply and are generally expected to approve developments under national guidelines. However, in this case, we agreed with officers that the damage to the local area would outweigh the benefits.”

He added that the loss of valuable green space and established small businesses were key factors in the committee’s decision to reject the application.
