Applications are now being invited for an impartial individual to take on a key decision-making role with the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Police and Crime Panel. The deadline for submissions is 4 January 2026.
The panel, supported by Leicestershire County Council, is responsible for publicly scrutinising the actions and decisions of the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC). To strengthen its effectiveness, the panel can appoint two independent members who are not publicly elected, helping to ensure a broad mix of skills, experience and perspectives.

Councillor Les Phillimore, the panel’s current chair, emphasised the importance of the independent role. “The Police and Crime Panel have a key role in monitoring and scrutinising the work of the Police and Crime Commissioner. Independent members bring an outside voice that gives such valuable input alongside our cross-party panel of councillors.
This is a chance to help ensure the Police and Crime Commissioner delivers an effective and efficient police force.
I’d like to thank our outgoing independent member for their contribution over the last four years and encourage anyone who feels they can bring insight, experience and enthusiasm to the role to apply and help make a difference to our work.”
Current independent panel member Parisha Chavda said the position offers a meaningful opportunity to influence local policing.
“Being part of the Police and Crime Panel is so rewarding and my knowledge of youth justice brings a really important perspective.
I know my skills and experience are being used to make a difference in holding the Police and Crime Commissioner to account. I would encourage anyone who thinks they might be suitable to apply.”
Applicants should be strategic thinkers with strong judgement, objectivity and the ability to analyse, challenge and support the panel’s work. While experience in policing, justice or the public sector may be useful, it is not essential.
The post carries a four-year term, and only one independent member will be appointed during this recruitment cycle. Candidates must not be politically affiliated, currently elected to public office, or serving as police officers.
Further details about the role and the application process can be found on the council’s jobs and volunteering page.
