Hundreds take part in Run for Redfern fundraiser at DMU

Runners, joggers and walkers gathered on Sunday for the annual Run for Redfern fundraiser, held in memory of De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) student and staff member Adam Redfern.

Around 180 participants completed the 5km route, starting and finishing at the Campus Centre and passing through Bede Park and along the River Soar towards Aylestone Meadows. Others joined remotely from around the world, sharing times and photos online.

The event was established after Adam died suddenly from cardiac arrest at the age of 28. His legacy continues through the Adam Redfern Memorial Fund, which supports student clubs, offers bursaries and raises awareness of cardiac risk in young people.

Adam’s friend Dan Winney praised the atmosphere, describing a “brilliant turnout” and strong sense of community, with runners encouraging each other throughout the course.

Jonathan Whitney, who has taken part every year, said the event inspired him to take up running. “It’s amazing to see so many people here,” he said, adding that it helps introduce Adam’s story to new participants.

Students from DMU Para Society also attended, demonstrating CPR and defibrillator use to raise awareness of life-saving skills. They highlighted that while thousands of cardiac arrests occur in public each year, only a small percentage receive defibrillator treatment.

Adam’s parents, Ian and Christine Redfern, said the continued support for the run is “incredibly special” and praised its role in supporting students and promoting awareness.

Run for Redfern is now a key part of the DMU calendar, bringing together the university community in celebration of Adam’s life.

Top finishers included Tom Edwards, Charlie Weston and Tom Watts in the men’s race, and Megan Gamble, Terri Wood and Maya Parker in the women’s event.
