Leicester’s 40th annual Diwali is underway in the city with 30-40,000 people expected on the Golden Mile this evening.
Belgrave Road is now closed off with the main stage erected in front of the Wheel of Light and festivities already started on Cossington Park.
A programme of music and dancing has already started as the crowds continue to arrive with the light switch on at 7.30pm and the traditional firework display to follow soon after.
PCSO Mark Williams said: “It’s always a great event, well attended with about 35,000 people coming tonight, It’s always a good atmosphere”.
The programme of events includes food stalls, funfair rides and a Rangoli exhibition with a parade featuring 100 beautiful willow lanterns, giant puppetry depicting the fight between good and evil.
