Appeal after body of dog found in river Soar

The RSPCA is appealing for information after the body of a dog was found in the River Soar under the Thurcaston Road Bridge, Leicester.

The body of the dog was found by a group of litter pickers at around 6pm on May 27 underneath the bridge. The dog was found inside a green bag which was partially submerged in the water.

The body, which is thought to have been in the water for a while, was retrieved by the members of the public who took the dog to a nearby vet and the incident was reported to the RSPCA due to the suspicious circumstances in which it was found.

The dog was a young entire male black and tan lurcher type breed – which was underweight and not microchipped.

The green plastic bag the body was found in had the label North Ayrshire Council on it and had a hole at the bottom.

RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer Ellie Grindrod attended the site and carried out some enquiries and collected the body from the vet.

Now the charity is appealing for information from the public and urges anyone who may have seen anything around the area to contact them via their inspectorate appeal line on 0300 123 8018 quoting incident 01533235.

ARO Ellie said: “This was an incredibly distressing discovery for the people who found this body and we are grateful to them for reporting this.

“While we do not know if the dog was alive or dead when he was dumped in the river – we are treating this as suspicious and would urge anyone that may recognise the description of the dog or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area to get in touch with us.”
