300 tables were set out and packed with party goers, many of which were dressed in royally fabulous fancy dress outfits fit for a Queen. Other highlights on the day included a giant conga procession, which was led down the town’s Market Street.

John Deakin, Ashby Town Mayor was on hand to officially open proceedings, together with Alison Smith MBE, the Deputy Lieutenant of Leicestershire.

“Only Ashby can do street parties like this”, she said of the event.

“It’s so heartwarming to see our communities coming together in a celebration of the Queen’s long service, and efforts to ensure everyone can be involved in this unique celebration.”

Speaking the historic event, she said: “The Platinum Jubilee is a very unique and very special occasion. The first time a monarch has reigned for 70 years.

“Since her accession in 1952, Queen Elizabeth has given her service to the people of Great Britain, and become a much loved and respected figure across the globe, through her dedication, charitable work and public engagement”.

Pictures of Ashby’s impressive street party have been shared by news publications across the world.

A similar thing happened back in 2012 when the town held its Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Speaking of the event, organiser Stuart Benson said that Ashby had “done itself proud once more”.

“Everyone made such an effort and the weather certainly didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits”, he said.

“There was a great party spirit and we just cracked on and made the best of it really.

“People really went to town. We had men dressed as drag Queens and ladies in their posh frocks looking like they were off to Ascot”, he added.

“The event had been a full year in the planning and so many people worked hard to make it a success. It was definitely worth every bit of effort, and is something that the Ashby will remember for a very long time”.
