BBC Radio Leicester presenters to take on epic swimming challenge for Children in Need!

A team of presenters from BBC Radio Leicester will be swapping the studios for swimming pools next month, as they take on a 24 miles swim for ‘Children in Need’.

Swim teams at BBC radio stations across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will attempt to swim 24 miles each – adding up to one thousand miles in total. That’s 64,000 lengths of a 25m pool!

The BBC Leicester swim team is made up of of Breakfast presenter Ady Dayman, Daytime presenter and ‘Brown Gal Can’t Swim’ host Summaya Mughal, Community reporter Kevin Ncube, outdoor swim enthusiast Helen McCarthy and Leicester City Commentator Owynn Palmer-Atkin.

They will be taking to pools across Leicestershire to complete the task between November 4 and 8.

Each member will swim 24 miles, which is the equivilent of swimming from Whitwick to Lutterworth.

Speaking about the task ahead, Breakfast presenter Ady Dayman, said: “I am absolutely honoured to be asked to be part of the Children In Need 1000 Mile Swim Challenge. It’s such a great cause and I’m buzzing to get stuck in. It’s going to be a real tough challenge but I’ll give it all I’ve got and I know I’ll get there with all the support around me.”


Sophie Cook, Acting Executive Editor at BBC Radio Leicester said: “I’m so excited for BBC Leicester team to be involved in the Thousand Mile Swim for Children in Need, Children in Need funds so many local charities and their projects, for the team to take on such a big challenge to raise money for these charities is so inspiring, and I know they’re up for the challenge.”

Children in Need is the BBC’s UK charity for disadvantaged children and young people in the UK. Between 1980 and 2023, it has raised over £1 billion for them.
