Plans to expand a 20mph zone across part of Braunstone could see more than 20 additional streets brought under lower speed limits in a bid to improve road safety.
Leicester City Council is proposing the extension across residential roads on the Braunstone estate, focusing on areas close to schools. The zone would stretch between the northern edge of Braunstone Lane and Narborough to the south, reaching across to the boundary of Braunstone Park.

Streets included in the proposals cover areas near Folville Junior School and Fullhurst Community College, with roads such as Audley End, Bainbridge Road, Beaufort Road and Bonville Place among those listed. Parts of Braunstone Avenue, Gooding Avenue, Hallam Crescent East and Waltham Avenue are also set to be included, alongside a number of closes and smaller residential streets.
According to consultation responses, around 77 per cent of those who took part backed the introduction of a 20mph limit in the area.
The scheme is expected to cost about £275,000, funded through the council’s transport improvement budget. Plans also include a range of traffic-calming measures such as speed cushions, road humps, pedestrian refuges and footpath buildouts.
The proposal forms part of a wider programme to roll out 20mph zones across the city. If approved, work is not expected to begin until late 2026.
