A Rutland piemakers have fulfilled an appetite for success after winning ‘Best in Category’ at the prestigious British Pie Awards.
Kavanagh’s are delighted that one of their pies, ‘The Italian Job’ (a take on melanzane parmigiania in their beautiful gluten free puff pastry) has Won in the much coveted Free From Category.
There was some tough competition as almost 1000 pies from all corners of the country entered, with results announced last Friday (March 8).
Clare Kavanagh says “that she is overwhelmed with winning this award”, as it almost didn’t happen.
The victory wasn’t without its share of drama. Just before delivering the pies for judging, disaster struck when one staff member accidentally dropped the entire batch! Thankfully, Kavanagh’s managed to bake a fresh batch in time, ensuring their pie made it to the competition. Clare goes on to say “I think it was serendipity as the second batch turned out even better than the first and I’m so glad we can all laugh about it now!”
They’ve been running their business for the past 8 years but only just started making Gluten Free Pies 3 weeks ago.
“Although we know the locals love them, it’s nice to get recognition from a National Awards event for the quality we produce,” said Clare.
The British Pie Awards, now in their 16th year, brings in entries from across the country and from bakers, butchers, pubs, sports clubs, Fish & Chip shops amongst other pie makers judged by a team of 140 judges.
The contest comprises 24 different classes or types of pie including traditional favourites, newcomers such as Vegan and Gluten Free Pies and this year a new Fusion Pie Class.
Meat-based pie entries dominated the top four classes with Beef & Alcohol topping the entry rankings.
Dr Matthew O’Callaghan Chairman of the British Pie Awards said; ‘I’m so pleased that Kavanagh’s are amongst the Award Winners. The judges were very complimentary about the pie which is why it won an Award.’
